The Old Fashioned is one of the oldest and most beloved cocktails, dating back to the early 19th century. Originally known simply as a “whiskey cocktail,” it was created as a way to enjoy spirits with minimal embellishment.
By the late 1800s, bartenders began adding fruit and other ingredients, but purists preferred the “old-fashioned” way—just whiskey, sugar, bitters, and water.
Today, the Old Fashioned remains a staple of cocktail culture, revered for its simplicity and balance. Whether made with bourbon for a sweeter, caramelized flavor or rye for a spicier kick, it’s a timeless classic that showcases the character of the whiskey.
Many modern variations exist, incorporating flavored bitters, smoked ingredients, or unique sweeteners like maple syrup. However, at its core, the Old Fashioned remains a true testament to the elegance of whiskey.
