Cigar Lingo: Ash

1–2 minutes

Ash refers to the end of a lit cigar. Its color and texture can reveal a lot about the tobacco’s origin. Cigars grown in magnesium-rich soil produce a bright, white ash, while excess magnesium can cause it to be flaky.

A dark or black ash often signals nutrient-deficient soil. For the best smoking experience, allow the ash to build slightly before gently tapping it off.

This helps maintain an even burn and enhances the cigar’s flavor profile. Ash isn’t just waste—it tells the story of the leaf.
