Here’s To Another Cowboys Draft.

3–5 minutes

There are birthday traditions that most people share.

The candles, the cake, maybe a favorite dinner and a stack of gifts on the kitchen table. Mine has always had something extra tucked inside it. Something that smells like freshly cut grass, sounds like commissioner applause, and feels like pure, uncut possibility.

My birthday has always lived inside the NFL Draft.

For as long as I can remember, the NFL Draft has hovered right around my birthday like a loyal second celebration. Growing up a Dallas Cowboys fan in Texas, that overlap wasn’t just coincidence it felt like destiny.

Every April, while the rest of the world was waking up to spring, I was waking up to something better: the promise of a new roster, a new hope, and the genuine belief that this could finally be our year.

Tearing open a birthday gift with one eye on the TV while the NFL commissioner reads a name from the podium that was my version of a perfect day.

The Early Years

Cake, Confetti and First-Round Picks
Picture it: the living room furniture rearranged just slightly to make room for cousins, uncles, and friends the TV volume turned up a notch above comfortable, a birthday cake with blue-and-silver frosting sitting on the counter.

That was the scene. Draft day and birthday colliding like two planets lining up in a perfect orbit. Every good pick felt like a gift the Cowboys had wrapped just for me. Every trade-up announcement had me and my family jumping off the couch mid-bite of cake.

There’s something uniquely joyful about celebrating a draft pick while simultaneously unwrapping a present. Both carry that same electric tension you don’t know exactly what’s inside until it’s revealed and for one shining moment, it could be anything.

It could be perfect. As a kid, I didn’t need much more than that feeling. The Cowboys were going to get better. I was another year older. The world made sense.

67 Seasons (1960-2026) 30+Years Since Last Super Bowl
5 Lombardi Trophies w/ 8 Appearances 36-31 Playoff Record

Older, Wiser, Still Watching
The years have a way of softening the sharp edges of blind optimism, but they haven’t taken the draft from me. Not even close. Now I watch with a little more context, a little more patience, and I’ll be honest, a lot more skepticism about some of the front office decisions.

Thirty years without a Super Bowl will do that to a person. It has a way of teaching you that hope and heartbreak are two sides of the same star-emblazoned coin.

But here’s the thing about the draft that no drought can take away: it is, by its very nature, a reset button.

Every April, every team starts from the same blank page. The Cowboys battered by wild-card exits and “next year” promises walk back to that podium with the same theoretical chance as anyone else. And on my birthday, sitting older now but no less invested, that reset still does something to my chest.

It still quickens the heartbeat.

Thirty years without a title, and yet every draft still feels like the first chapter of the story we’ve been waiting to read.

Looking Ahead

Here’s to Another Round. I won’t pretend the Cowboys have been flawless in the draft room. They’ve had their misses picks that didn’t pan out, trades that stung in hindsight, years where the promise of April evaporated long before Thanksgiving.

The hit-and-miss nature of this franchise is at this point woven into my identity as a fan. I’ve made my peace with the uncertainty. What I haven’t made peace with is giving up and the draft won’t let me.

So here we are again. Another April, another birthday rolling around the corner, another first round on the horizon. There’ll probably be chips on the table and something cold to drink.

The TV will be on too loud. Someone in the room will second-guess every pick. And somewhere in the back of my mind, the kid who grew up opening birthday gifts during draft coverage will still be right there eyes wide, completely convinced that this is the year everything changes.

Here’s to the 2026 NFL Draft. Here’s to another birthday wrapped in football. And most of all here’s to you, Dallas. Thirty years is long enough. Let’s finally bring one home.

How ‘Bout Them Cowboys
Another Birthday Draft Day. Faithful ’til the final whistle. Always America’s Team.
