A Grain-to-Glass Birthday at Blackland Distillery

3–4 minutes

Some birthdays sneak up on you, and others arrive wrapped in the warm amber glow of a great old fashioned. Mine landed squarely in the latter category, thanks to my wonderful wife, who surprised me with a tour at Blackland Distillery — Fort Worth’s celebrated craft distillery tucked into the lively West 7th district.

I didn’t know what to expect walking in, but I walked out a believer.

From the moment we stepped through the door, the space hit us with exactly the right vibe — cozy but cool, with just enough industrial character to remind you that real craft is happening here.

The staff wasted no time making us feel like regulars. We were welcomed in, shown to a table, and before we even had a chance to look around, we were sitting in front of a curated flight featuring every spirit in Blackland’s lineup: vodka, gin, bourbon, rye, and the showstopper — their Texas Pecan Brown Sugar Bourbon.

The bartender handed me a birthday old fashioned perfectly balanced, spirit-forward, the kind of drink that makes you slow down and pay attention.

My wife received a dreamsicle fizz, a dreamy concoction of Blackland bourbon, vanilla cream soda, aromatic bitters, and orange ice cubes that tasted like a childhood summer reimagined for adults.

Both drinks showcased exactly what a house cocktail should do: let the spirit shine while adding something memorable of its own.

The Tour
After our welcome flight and cocktails, we set off on the distillery tour with Sophie as our guide. She was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and walked us through every stage of the process with genuine passion.

What sets Blackland apart from other distilleries I’ve visited is its deep integration of technology into the production process.

This isn’t a romanticized, old-world operation it’s a forward-thinking Texas distillery that leans into precision and innovation without losing its soul.

Sophie explained how Blackland operates grain-to-glass, sourcing local Texas grains and botanicals wherever possible. Watching the process unfold from fermentation through distillation gave us a real appreciation for what ends up in those bottles.

Every spirit on that tasting flight suddenly had a story — and a reason for tasting the way it did.

The Lineup

  • Blackland Vodka Distilled from local Texas wheat — clean, smooth, and a proud showcase of the state’s grain.
  • Blackland Gin Twelve botanicals including juniper, coriander, and grapefruit peel — complex, bright, and Texas-forward.
  • Blackland Bourbon Whiskey A small-batch wheated bourbon — accessible, well-rounded, and a workhorse of the cocktail menu.
  • Blackland Rye Whiskey Made from local Texan rye grain — spicy, dry, and unmistakably regional in character.
  • Blackland Prairie Gold Texas Straight Bourbon Aged a minimum of three years, 100-proof, with triticale (a rye-wheat hybrid) as the primary flavoring grain. Exceptional depth.
  • Blackland Texas Pecan Brown Sugar Bourbon Pecan and sweet molasses-forward — the crowd favorite at our table and an undeniably fun Texas expression.
  • Blackland Texpresso Whiskey 70-proof Texas whiskey meets coffee, pecans, and brown sugar. A dessert in a glass and a late-night guilty pleasure.

Across the board, the spirits showed a distillery that knows its identity.

These aren’t just Texas-branded versions of familiar products they’re spirits that taste like they came from a specific place, made by people with a specific point of view. That’s rare, and it’s worth celebrating.
